We often wonder at the rest of the country outside the ranch, it seems the cowboy logic is in short supply when it comes to solving problems.
Our friends who come to Redd Ranches as interns or exchange students have enriched our lives and broaden our minds and hearts with their life stories. Whether from Ricks College, CSU, University of Wisconsin, Ghana, Zimbabwe, Japan, Russia (Belarus) or Argentina, they are a part of our family, we love and care about them. They connect us backwater folks in Paradox to the broader world, much to our benefit.
Why would these folks come to Redd Ranches from around the world? Performance, no nonsense management, real economic use of the best measures, practical use of science, an ability to survive in a harsh dry climate, a determination to improve our land, cattle and family quality of life.
We believe in following science, applying what works. Our heritage comes from never being satisfied with our production or the economics of the cattle business, it needs to be better. We have made it better, today we have more live calves, more calves survive to wean, 100 pounds plus more weaning weight, higher percent calves weaned, our cattle consistently outperform in the feedlot and grade choice in fewer days and earn a premium when sold on the rail.
So, we have done some things right, and we are striving to do more things to improve the cattle you buy from our backwoods operation in Paradox.
Living in what my Grandfather, Lem Redd, called “a naturally dry country,” our goal has been to adapt our cattle to be more self-sufficient on the range, breed back early, calve unassisted, survive to weaning, and do it all with less feed. As luck will have it these highly fertile cows that are well adapted to the desert and high mountain ranges produce early maturing calves with superior quality carcasses.
Life is short, if you want improve your cattle, get more pounds weaned per cow bred, more profitable cattle; you need to use bulls that will improve your productivity and potential to profit.
